The 3T method

Delegates practised the 3T (Through The Trap) method, in which the operative works from the trapdoor of a guarded platform while fitting the next set of guardrails, so they are never standing on an unprotected platform. It is a recognised technique for reducing the risk of falls during assembly and dismantling.

Why working at height training matters

Falls from height remain one of the biggest risks in construction. On data centre projects, mobile towers are used daily for containment, lighting and cable installation, so competence in their safe use is essential. The training supports SA3 Power’s health, safety, environment and quality commitments and its focus on investing in its people.

3T and AGR compared

  • 3T (Through The Trap): the operative works from the trapdoor of a guarded platform while fitting guardrails for the next level. No extra equipment is needed.
  • AGR (Advanced Guard Rail): temporary guardrail units are fitted from the level below, so protection is already in place before the operative climbs onto the next platform.

Key checks before using a mobile tower

  • the ground is level and firm, and castors are locked;
  • all components are present, undamaged and correctly fitted;
  • guardrails and toe boards are in place on the working platform;
  • the tower has been inspected and the inspection is recorded; and
  • the tower is never moved with people or materials on it.

Quick answers

What is 3T (Through The Trap) tower assembly?

A method of building and dismantling a mobile tower where the operative stays in the trapdoor of a guarded platform while fitting the next guardrails.

What is an Advanced Guard Rail (AGR) system?

Temporary guardrails installed from the level below, so protection is in place before the operative steps onto the next platform.

Who completed the training?

Members of the SA3 Power team based in Frankfurt, Germany.

What is the difference between 3T and AGR?

With 3T the operative fits guardrails from the protected trapdoor; with AGR temporary guardrails are fitted from the level below before climbing up.

Can you move a mobile tower with someone on it?

No. Towers should never be moved with people or materials on the platform.
